Pageant Interview Questions for 2026, and How to Answer Them
The interview is where the judges get to know the person behind the sash. It can happen one on one, in front of a panel, or on stage, and every pageant runs it its own way, so check your pageant's rules for the format and length.
Interview is one of several categories a contestant is judged in; pageant categories and age divisions explains the rest. The questions differ from pageant to pageant, but one way of answering works for all of them.
How to answer any interview question
Pick an answer and stick with it. Judges can tell when you are unsure. An answer that changes halfway through sounds like you are guessing at what they want to hear.
Always say why. "My favorite book is Wonder" is a fact. "My favorite book is Wonder, because it taught me to look for the kid sitting alone at lunch" is an answer.
Three reasons at most. One strong reason is fine. Three is the limit. More than that and the answer runs long and your best reason gets lost.
Put together, a strong answer sounds like this:
Q: Can one person make a difference in the world? Yes, I believe one person can. First, every big change starts with one person deciding to act. Second, I've seen it in my own town, where one volunteer started the food pantry my family helps with. And third, a difference doesn't have to be big to matter to the person you help. That's why I show up every week.
Answer, why, up to three reasons, and a close that brings it back to you.
How to practice without memorizing
Practice is how you learn what is true for you, so you can say it clearly in the moment. Your favorite foods, movies and books, and even the person you look up to, can change as you grow, and your answers should change with you. A memorized script can't keep up with that.
- Journal a little every day. You don't need to write for hours. Start with five questions a day.
- Use flash cards. Write the question on the front and your answer on the back. Study Nook's free flash card maker lets you type your cards and print them or save them as a PDF, with no sign up to start.
- Record yourself. Watch it back and listen for filler words and answers that run long.
- Practice in a mirror. You'll see your mannerisms and where your eyes go when you are thinking.
- Answer out loud, every time. A question you have only thought through is different from one you have said.
Know these cold
These have one right answer, and judges expect you to know them whatever pageant you enter:
- Who is the current titleholder of the pageant you are competing in? Know their platform and a few facts about them too.

Current events and opinion questions (teens and adults)

Pick five and start today
Choose five questions from this list, write them on flash cards, and answer them out loud tonight. Tomorrow, pick five more. By the time you walk into your interview, you won't have a script. You'll know what you think and why.

Frequently asked questions
How do you answer a pageant interview question?
Pick an answer and stick with it, then give the reason why. Support it with up to three reasons, and finish with one short sentence that brings it back to you.
Should you memorize pageant interview answers?
No. Practice finding what is true for you in the moment. Your favorite book, movie or the person you look up to can change over time, and an answer you believe sounds better than one you recite.
How can a contestant practice for a pageant interview?
Write five questions a day on flash cards with the question on the front and your answer on the back, answer them out loud, record yourself, and practice in front of a mirror to see where you look and what habits you have.
What should every contestant know before a pageant interview?
The name of the current titleholder of the pageant you are entering, and the names of your governor, your state representative and the president.
